When you are standing in front of a counter in a butcher shop or in a bakery, the shop assistant might say "Bitteschön!" when it is your turn in the sense of "What would you like to have?".
Here in Germany, it belongs to the good social etiquette to say thank you for something. Otherwise people might find it impolite and have the impression that you take their help for granted.
